Lorwyn Eclipsed (ECL): Set Guide
Returns to beloved planes are always exciting, and Lorwyn Eclipsed (ECL) is bringing us back to one of Magic's most distinctive and beloved worlds. As the 109th Magic expansion and the first set of 2026, it carries both a rich legacy and a lot of player anticipation.
Fair warning upfront: this set is still relatively new, and some details remain to be confirmed. I'll flag clearly where information is limited, and we'll update this guide as more is revealed.
What is Lorwyn Eclipsed?
Lorwyn Eclipsed is Magic: The Gathering's 109th expansion, developed under the internal codename "Wrestling." It was originally slated for a Q4 2025 release before being moved to January 23, 2026, making it the opening set of Magic's 2026 release calendar.
The set contains 403 cards and returns to the plane of Lorwyn - a sun-drenched, folkloric world that first appeared in the original Lorwyn set back in 2007.
The plane of Lorwyn
If you weren't playing back in 2007, here's why Lorwyn has such a special place in Magic history. It's a plane of perpetual summer twilight, inhabited by creature types that feel pulled from Celtic and British Isles folklore: Kithkin, Merfolk, Giants, Faeries, Treefolk, Elementals, Goblins, and Elves. Everything about it - the art, the atmosphere, the creature-type focus - felt unlike anything Magic had done before.
The original Lorwyn block told a two-part story. Lorwyn (2007) introduced the plane in its long summer, and Morningtide (2008) continued it. The novels by Cory J. Herndon and Scott McGough followed characters like Rhys the Exiled, Ashling the Pilgrim, Brigid Baeli, and the enigmatic Faerie queen Oona across both books.
Lore aside: Lorwyn has a dark twin - the plane of Shadowmoor, where Lorwyn transforms into a permanent twilight of fear and shadow. The interplay between these two states of the same world was one of the block's most ambitious narrative ideas. Whether Lorwyn Eclipsed engages with that duality is something I'm very curious to see.
Themes and mechanics
Details here are still being revealed, so I'll share what we know and be honest about the gaps.
The set is confirmed to include tokens, emblems, and markers, though the specific designs and which mechanics they support haven't been fully detailed yet. Given the plane's history, it would be surprising if creature types didn't play a meaningful role - the original Lorwyn block essentially invented the "tribal" (now officially called "Kindred") mechanical identity that many sets still draw from.
I'll update this section as spoiler season gets underway.
Limited and Draft
We don't have enough information yet to give a full picture of Lorwyn Eclipsed's Draft format. Once card previews are available, we'll be breaking down the archetypes, format speed, and what to look for at the table.
If the original Lorwyn's draft format is any guide, expect creature-type synergies to matter a lot - drafting a critical mass of the right tribe was often the key to finding a coherent strategy in that format.
Format check: Check back here as spoiler season progresses for a full Limited breakdown.
Set legacy and context
Lorwyn as a plane has never quite left Magic's cultural memory. Cards from the original block - things like the Faerie package from Lorwyn - have had a lasting competitive footprint across formats for years. A return to this plane is one of those announcements that tends to get long-time players genuinely excited, and for good reason.
It's the first set of 2026, which means it sets the tone for a new Standard rotation cycle and will likely be the foundation of a new Draft format for several months. That's a significant position in the release calendar, and it suggests Wizards has real confidence in what this set offers.
As more information becomes available - mechanics confirmed, cards previewed, the full story outlined - we'll expand every section of this guide. For now, mark January 23, 2026 on your calendar. ✨
