March of the Machine Promos (PMOM): Complete Guide
Promo sets are easy to overlook, but if you're chasing a particular version of a card, they're worth knowing inside out. March of the Machine Promos (set code PMOM) is the companion promo release to March of the Machine (MOM), Wizards' 2023 spring set - and it spans 134 cards across several distinct promo categories, each tied to a different event or purchase opportunity during MOM's release window in April-August 2023.
This guide breaks down exactly what was available, where you could get it, and which cards are worth tracking down.
What is March of the Machine Promos?
March of the Machine Promos is the official promotional card set associated with March of the Machine, released in April 2023. Like most modern promo sets, PMOM isn't a standalone product you can buy in a pack - instead, it's a collection of alternate-art, alternate-frame, or stamped versions of cards from the main set, distributed through specific retail events, purchases, and tournament play.
The set code PMOM encompasses 134 cards total, covering everything from the standard prerelease stamp treatment to textless winner promos for Store Championships.
Format check: The legality of any PMOM card mirrors the legality of its main-set printing. A promo version of a Standard-legal card is Standard-legal; a promo version of a card that was already banned stays banned. The promo treatment never changes a card's rules status.
Promo categories and how to get them
PMOM promos were distributed through several distinct channels, each with its own card(s). Here's how the full picture breaks down.
Prerelease promos
The most widely distributed PMOM promos came from Prerelease events, which ran April 14-20, 2023 - just before the digital and tabletop launch.
Every player who participated received a stamped rare or mythic rare from March of the Machine. These date-stamped cards can be any rare or mythic in the set, which means the pool of potential prerelease promos is broad. If you played prerelease sealed, the stamped card in your kit is part of PMOM.
Separately, three Commander-legal prerelease promos with alternate art were available:
- Goro-Goro and Satoru
- Katilda and Lier
- Slimefoot and Squee
These three are particularly appealing for Commander players who want a slightly different look for their legendary creature without hunting down expensive collector variants.
Buy-a-Box promo
Purchasing a booster box of March of the Machine from a local game store unlocked an alternate-art Omnath, Locus of All - one of the more high-profile promos in the PMOM set, given Omnath's long competitive history across formats.
Bundle promo
The MOM Bundle came with an alternate-art Ghalta and Mavren as its exclusive promo. Bundles are a popular entry point for newer players, so this is one of the more accessible PMOM cards to track down on the secondary market.
Store Championship promos
Store Championships ran May 13-21, 2023, and offered three different promos depending on how you finished:
| Finish | Promo card | |---|---| | Participation | Strangle | | Top 8 | Aether Channeler | | Winner | Textless Thalia and The Gitrog Monster |
The textless winner promo for Thalia and The Gitrog Monster is the rarest of the three - textless treatments are always low-supply, and winning a Store Championship is no small feat. If you want one, expect to pay a premium on the secondary market.
Lore aside: Thalia and The Gitrog Monster as a card reflects one of the more striking story beats of the Phyrexian invasion - two iconic Innistrad characters, longtime adversaries, forced into an unlikely alliance against a common existential threat.
Commander Party promo
The WPN Premium-Exclusive Commander Party, held May 26-28, 2023, offered a Phyrexian-language Beast Within. Phyrexian-language cards have been a recurring treatment since Phyrexia: All Will Be One, and they're a favourite among flavour-first collectors. Beast Within is also a Commander staple, which makes this version genuinely useful rather than just decorative.
Universal promo pack cards
Other events - including Friday Night Magic (April 21 - August 25, 2023) and Commander Nights (April 24 - August 31, 2023) - distributed cards from the March of the Machine universal promo pack. These packs contain a rotating selection of cards relevant to the current season, typically with the standard promo stamp treatment.
30th Anniversary promos
Three promos were produced in connection with Magic's 30th Anniversary celebrations:
- Eternal Witness
- Chord of Calling (Portuguese-language version)
- Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind
The Portuguese Chord of Calling is a curiosity - language-specific promos are uncommon in the modern era, and this one was presumably tied to events or distribution in Brazil, one of Magic's largest markets.
Relationship to the main March of the Machine set
March of the Machine (MOM) is a large set with its own unusual structure worth understanding if you're trying to contextualise where PMOM fits.
MOM Draft and Set Boosters each include one card from Multiverse Legends (MUL) - a separate 65-card reprint set featuring iconic characters rendered in their home plane's Booster Fun treatment. Those MUL cards are not part of PMOM, and they're only legal in formats where they already had a legal printing (plus Historic).
PMOM cards are similarly separate from the main MOM card list - they're alternate treatments of MOM cards, not additional cards that change the set's size or Draft environment.
Set legacy
March of the Machine Promos sits within one of the most event-dense promo release windows in recent memory. The combination of Prerelease promos, Commander-specific alternate-art legendaries, a Phyrexian-language reprint of a Commander staple, and a textless Store Championship winner card gave players and collectors a lot to chase across a wide range of engagement levels.
For most players, the most practically useful PMOM cards are the Commander prerelease promos (alternate-art legendaries you can slot directly into a deck) and the Phyrexian Beast Within (a beautiful version of a card that sees play in virtually every green Commander deck). The textless Thalia and The Gitrog Monster winner promo is in my opinion the most striking card in the set - textless treatments have a timeless quality that holds up long after the set has rotated out of the conversation.
