Secrets of Strixhaven Mystical Archive (SOA): Set Guide

By Kim HildeqvistUpdated

Some sets reprint old cards. The Mystical Archive does something more interesting: it treats spellcasting as history, framing 63 of Magic's most iconic instants and sorceries as scholarly artifacts recovered from the vaults of the most elite university in the Multiverse.

The Secrets of Strixhaven Mystical Archive (set code SOA) is a 63-card supplemental series released alongside Strixhaven: School of Mages in 2021. Think of it as Magic's answer to the Masterpiece Series - but with a more direct footprint in the Limited environment and a visual identity unlike anything Wizards of the Coast had done before.

What is Secrets of Strixhaven Mystical Archive?

The Mystical Archive is a set of 63 reprints - all instants and sorceries - bundled into Strixhaven: School of Mages booster products as bonus cards. The set carries the code STA on individual cards (the SOA code refers to the product grouping), and it spans three rarity tiers: 18 uncommons, 30 rares, and 15 mythic rares. There are no commons in the Archive, even though some of the reprinted cards (like Opt) were originally printed at common.

All 18 uncommons are reprints of cards that were legal in 2020-2021 Standard at the time of release, which kept them accessible for newer players while giving the rare and mythic slots room for genuinely powerful and historically significant spells.

Format check: Mystical Archive cards are only legal in formats where they were already legal before the reprint. They do not enter Standard. They are, however, fully playable in Limited - which is a big deal, as we'll get to below.

Themes and the Archive's identity

Creatively, Strixhaven is built around "instants and sorceries matter" as its central mechanical theme. The Mystical Archive is the purest expression of that idea: every single card in the set is an instant or sorcery, presented as a first-edition scholarly record - the first time that spell was ever cast.

The frame design takes direct inspiration from European illuminated manuscripts, giving each card an ornate, handcrafted quality that feels genuinely different from the rest of Magic's card catalogue. The flavor text leans into the academic setting of Strixhaven, framing spells as historical events documented by the university's archivists.

This isn't just decoration. The Mystical Archive is thematically continuous with what the main set is doing - Strixhaven's five colleges are obsessed with the study and history of magic, and the Archive is the physical representation of that library within the game itself.

Japanese alternate-art variants

Alongside the standard global versions, each of the 63 Mystical Archive cards has a Japanese alternate-art variant - numbered #64-126 - with artwork inspired by traditional Japanese paintings. These are genuinely distinct pieces of art, not just different frames on the same image, and they've become some of the most sought-after collector pieces from the era.

Japanese variants appear in Japanese Draft, Set, and Collector Boosters at equal rates to the standard versions. In Collector Boosters across all languages, at least one Japanese alternate-art Mystical Archive card is guaranteed per pack.

How the Archive is distributed

The distribution model is what separates the Mystical Archive from a traditional insert set. Rather than replacing a card of the same rarity, Archive cards appear in their own dedicated slot:

  • Draft Boosters - one Mystical Archive card in a bonus slot (doesn't displace any other card)
  • Set Boosters - one Mystical Archive card in a bonus slot
  • Collector Boosters - at least three Mystical Archive cards, including at least one Japanese alternate-art version

Because the Archive slot doesn't replace anything, it's entirely possible to open two rare cards in a single Draft Booster - one from the main set and one from the Archive. That's a meaningful upgrade to the feel of opening packs.

Both regular and Japanese versions are available in foil. Foil-etched treatments exist as well, but these are exclusive to Collector Boosters.

The Archive in Limited play

This is where the Mystical Archive gets genuinely interesting, and where it diverges most sharply from the old Masterpiece Series.

Mystical Archive cards are legal in Limited. In Sealed, any Archive card you open is part of your card pool. In Draft, you must actively draft Archive cards from the pack to use them - they're not a free addition. That means every draft pick involving an Archive card carries real weight. You're choosing between a card that could dramatically reshape your deck and whatever else is in that pack.

Because the set is entirely instants and sorceries, the Archive slots neatly into Strixhaven's spell-matters themes. A well-timed Archive card in a Silverquill or Prismari deck could easily be the most powerful card in any given Limited pool.

The Archive on MTG Arena

The Mystical Archive was available in Strixhaven drafts on MTG Arena when the set launched. However, seven of the 63 cards were held back from joining Historic - the format that accommodates most non-Standard legal sets on Arena - due to power level concerns. The specific seven weren't added to Historic, though the rest of the Archive became available there.

This is worth keeping in mind if you're playing on Arena and wondering why your physical collection doesn't perfectly mirror what's available digitally.

The Showcase: Strixhaven companion series

The Mystical Archive's visual identity was complemented by Showcase: Strixhaven, a separate series of six allied-color spells printed in the same ornate frame style. These six cards appear in the main Strixhaven set and share the Archive's aesthetic, extending the illuminated-manuscript look into the set's original cards.

The Archive's legacy

The Mystical Archive represents a meaningful evolution in how Wizards approaches insert reprint sets. By tying it directly to the Limited environment - and by grounding it in a thematic concept (a magical university's historical library) rather than just "here are expensive reprints" - it does double duty as both a collector product and an active part of the draft format.

The Japanese alternate-art versions in particular have aged well as collector items, with their distinct artistic tradition making them stand out even among Magic's increasingly crowded premium card space. And the frame design itself influenced how Wizards thought about showcase treatments in subsequent sets.

For Strixhaven as a whole, the Archive is inseparable from the set's identity. It's not an add-on - it's the library at the heart of the school.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Secrets of Strixhaven Mystical Archive legal in Standard?
No. Mystical Archive cards are only legal in formats where the reprinted card was already legal before the reprint. They do not enter Standard. They are, however, fully playable in Limited events — Sealed and Draft — which is one of their most notable features.
How many cards are in the Mystical Archive set?
The Mystical Archive contains 63 cards — all instants or sorceries — split across 18 uncommons, 30 rares, and 15 mythic rares. There are no commons in the set. The Japanese alternate-art variants add another 63 cards (numbered #64–126), bringing the total printings to 126.
What is the difference between the regular and Japanese Mystical Archive cards?
Every Mystical Archive card has two art versions: the global version with artwork inspired by European illuminated manuscripts, and a Japanese alternate-art version with artwork inspired by traditional Japanese paintings. These are entirely distinct pieces of art. Japanese variants are found in Japanese Draft, Set, and Collector Boosters, and at least one appears in Collector Boosters in all languages.
Can you use Mystical Archive cards in a Strixhaven draft?
Yes — but you have to draft them. Every Draft Booster contains one Mystical Archive card in a dedicated bonus slot. You see it in the pack and must pick it like any other card if you want it in your pool. In Sealed, any Mystical Archive card you open is automatically part of your card pool.
Are all Mystical Archive cards available on MTG Arena?
Most of them are, but not all. Seven of the 63 Mystical Archive cards were withheld from the Historic format on Arena due to power level concerns when Strixhaven launched. The rest of the Archive was made available in Strixhaven drafts and Historic.
What is the set code for Mystical Archive cards?
Individual Mystical Archive cards carry the set code STA. The product grouping is sometimes referenced as SOA (Secrets of Strixhaven). If you're searching for these cards on Scryfall or in a collection manager, STA is the code to use.
