Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander (TDC) — Set Guide
Commander preconstructed decks have become one of Magic's most reliable release traditions, and Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander (set code: TDC) follows that pattern - a set of ready-to-play decks launching alongside the main Tarkir: Dragonstorm set, bringing new Legendary cards and thematic reprints to the Commander table.
Details on release date, deck names, and card contents are still being revealed as of this writing, so think of this as a living guide. We'll note clearly what's confirmed and what's still marked TBA.
What is Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander?
Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander is the companion Commander precon product to Tarkir: Dragonstorm, releasing on the same date as the main set. The full product contains 413 cards across its decks, blending brand-new cards designed specifically for Commander with curated reprints that suit the Dragonstorm theme.
Like other Commander precon releases, TDC is designed to be picked up and played immediately - no deckbuilding required, though most players will want to tune and upgrade once they've seen the contents.
What's in each Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander deck?
Each individual deck package contains:
- 1 foil Commander - the face card and primary commander of the deck
- 1 additional foil Legendary card - a second legendary option or notable inclusion
- 98 regular cards - the rest of the 100-card ready-to-play deck
- 10 double-sided tokens - to track creatures, emblems, and other game objects the deck produces
- 1 helper card - a quick-reference card for rules or abilities relevant to the deck
- 1 deck box - to store the deck
- 1 Collector Booster Sample Pack - containing 2 cards for a taste of the collector's product
That's a fairly standard Commander precon configuration, and the inclusion of a Collector Booster Sample Pack continues a trend Wizards has leaned into over recent releases.
New cards and format legality
New cards printed in TDC - those with the TDC set code numbered in the new-card range - are legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage. As is standard for Commander precon cards, they are not automatically legal in formats like Standard, Pioneer, or Modern unless they appear in a set legal in those formats.
Reprints in TDC carrying the TDC set code are legal in any format where a card of the same name is already permitted. So if a reprint was already Modern-legal under its original printing, the TDC version is too.
Some reprints in the decks feature new art specifically suited to the Dragonstorm theme - a detail worth knowing if you're a collector or care about which version of a card sits in your sleeve.
Format check: If you're hoping to pull TDC cards for Standard or Pioneer play, check legality card by card on Scryfall. The set code alone doesn't tell the whole story.
Themes and mechanics
The specific deck names, commanders, and mechanical themes for Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander haven't been fully revealed yet. Given the parent set's Dragonstorm branding and Tarkir's deep history with Dragons and clan-based identities, it's reasonable to expect Dragon tribal themes and possibly callbacks to Tarkir's khans and warlords - but I won't speculate beyond that until the official details are confirmed.
We'll update this section as spoilers and announcements arrive.
Lore and setting
Tarkir is one of Magic's most beloved planes - a world defined by warring clans and, depending on the timeline, either dominated by Dragons or shaped by their absence. Tarkir: Dragonstorm revisits this plane, and the Commander decks are designed to complement and extend that story.
Beyond that, the lore specifics tied to these particular decks are still TBA. Tarkir's history is rich enough that there's plenty of story to draw from, and I'm genuinely curious which corners of the plane's past and present the decks will explore.
What we're still waiting on
Honestly, a fair amount. At time of writing, the following are all listed as TBA:
- Release date
- Number of decks in the product
- Deck names and commanders
- Full card lists and new card numbers
- Specific reprints and their alternate art versions
This is worth flagging upfront rather than burying - if you're making purchasing decisions, hold tight for the full reveal.
